The artist creates in an ongoing dialogue with his artistic environment, the society in which he lives, and his identity. These, in turn, are translated into practices, strategies, and tools—an artistic language that on one hand reflects, but on the other also frames the creator within the identity they construct for themselves, shaped by their education and experience. Breaking these artistic conventions, re-examining and challenging them, dissolves the rigidity imposed on both language and body. It opens the work to a different gaze, through other eyes, toward another identity and another culture, and in doing so grants permission to play with and challenge what is taken for granted—what is sacred, human, delicate, frightening, cool, and even ridiculous.
“Dances of Others” invites dance and body artists from various performative disciplines to come together for collective work in a playful and open approach. It seeks to create and reflect on dance, the body, movement, and the performing arts through the perspective of cultural studies. The course offers entry into unfamiliar territories as a journey of question marks—aimed at refining skills in creation, composition, and improvisation. Through encountering and experiencing dances we do not know—dances of others—we practice unfamiliar modes of performance, body, and choreography, while examining artistic, social, and cultural questions.
“Dances of Others” is part of the Advanced Training Program of Tel Aviv Culture Da Vinci center.
10 sessions | Tuesdays, May 12 – July 21
The course is intended for artists for whom body, dance, and/or movement are a central focus of their work.
